Birubi Beach 4WD Tour with Sandboarding

About this experience

Port Stephens 4WD Tours runs this from its base on James Paterson St, Anna Bay, at the northern end of Stockton Beach. You climb into a red, air-conditioned 4WD and drive 2 km down Birubi Beach with commentary. On the sand the guide shows you how to find and dig pipis, the small clams that live under the wet sand, and with luck RAAF fighter jets fly past low.

After about 20 minutes on the beach you head into the dunes for 45 to 50 minutes of sandboarding, with the guide teaching technique and taking photos. Then it is back to base. The whole tour is 75 minutes, and the national parks fee, the board, water and the guide are all in the price.

It runs rain, hail or shine. There is no pickup, so you make your own way to Anna Bay. And the pipis stay on the beach: NSW fisheries rules allow pipis to be collected for use as fishing bait only, not to take home and eat.

What guests say

★★★★★

My family (12,10 and 3 year old kids) and I really enjoyed to combination of education at the beach, and 40 min of sand boarding. Especially for the kids the right amount of time to explore it and have some fun rides.

Tips before you book

  • Sunglasses and sunscreen are on the listing's bring list. Add a hat: there is no shade on the open sand.
  • Wear clothes you can shake out. The sand comes home with you either way.
  • Pipis are bait only in NSW. Dig, look, photograph, put them back.
  • The listing marks it as likely to sell out, so book school holiday dates early.
  • Make it a half day with the Koala Sanctuary at One Mile, 10 minutes from Nelson Bay.
