Getting to Port Stephens

There is no train to Port Stephens, but you do not need a car to get there. One coach a day runs from Sydney's Central Station, buses meet the train in Newcastle, and the region's airport is inside Port Stephens itself.

Port Stephens is a car-friendly place, and most visitors drive the 2.5 hours from Sydney. Without a car you have four choices: the Sydney Express coach from Central, the train to Newcastle and a local bus, a flight into Newcastle Airport at Williamtown, or a day tour from Sydney that brings you back the same evening.

Here is each one with 2026 fares, the catches (the coach wants booking 72 hours ahead, local buses take no cash), and how to get back to Sydney.

The quick answer

Take Port Stephens Coaches' Sydney Express from Central Station: A$45 one way or A$65 return for adults in 2026, once a day, every day except Christmas Day, with stops in Nelson Bay, Shoal Bay, Fingal Bay and Anna Bay. For one day only, a day tour ($172) or the budget day trip ($96) includes the transport.

Can you get a train from Sydney to Port Stephens?

Not all the way. No passenger train reaches Port Stephens. You can take the train to Newcastle Interchange and continue on a local bus, or take the direct Sydney Express coach from Central.

The Central Coast and Newcastle Line runs from Sydney's Central Station to Newcastle Interchange, and you pay with Opal or a contactless card like any Sydney train. From Newcastle Interchange, route 130 runs to Nelson Bay and on to Fingal Bay via Newcastle Airport and Salamander Bay, and the weekday express route 131 goes to Shoal Bay.

Two legs means one catch: Port Stephens Coaches says its buses run to a timetable and do not wait for delayed trains. Leave a buffer, and check the connection in the Transport for NSW trip planner on the day.

Does Port Stephens have a train station?

No. The nearest station is Newcastle, about 60 km from Nelson Bay by road.

The peninsula towns (Nelson Bay, Shoal Bay, Fingal Bay, Anna Bay) rely on buses and the Sydney coach. Port Stephens Coaches runs both: the public buses that meet the trains in Newcastle, and the private Sydney Express. If a journey planner shows Port Stephens as a stop, that leg is a bus, not a train.

How do you get from Sydney to Port Stephens without a car?

The Sydney Express coach is the simplest: one coach, Central Station to the peninsula, A$45 one way. A day tour is the easiest if you only have one day.

Can you fly into Port Stephens?

Yes. Newcastle Airport is at Williamtown, inside Port Stephens, with Jetstar, Virgin Australia and QantasLink flights. The Koala Sanctuary is about 30 minutes' drive from the terminal.

The airport shares its runway with RAAF Base Williamtown and has flights to and from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Perth, Hobart, Cairns and Bali. For most visitors from interstate it is the quickest way in.

From the terminal, Port Stephens Coaches runs buses to Newcastle Interchange (up to 11 a day, per the airport) and to the Nelson Bay area; route 130 calls at the airport on its way to Nelson Bay. The airport does not sell Opal cards, and you do not need one: tap on with a contactless Visa, Mastercard or Amex. The quad bike ride at Williamtown is close by too, if you land in time: see the quad bike tour.

How long is the drive from Sydney to Port Stephens?

About 2.5 hours to Nelson Bay, roughly 207 km north-north-east of Sydney, up the M1 Pacific Motorway past Newcastle.

That is the figure the Koala Sanctuary and the cruise operators all quote, in normal traffic. Expect longer on holiday weekends and around the Heatherbrae roadworks, which Port Stephens Coaches now avoids altogether. Once you are on the peninsula, Nelson Bay to the Koala Sanctuary is 10 minutes.

Two things drivers ask about. Parking at d'Albora Marina, where the dolphin sail leaves, costs extra. And you cannot just drive onto Stockton Beach: NSW National Parks requires a Worimi beach vehicle permit, and annual park passes do not count. The dune tours handle that for you.

How do you get around Port Stephens without a car?

By local bus and on foot. Buses link the peninsula towns, take Opal or contactless cards only (no cash), and stop a minute's walk from the Koala Sanctuary.

Routes 132 and 133 loop between Soldiers Point, Salamander Bay, Nelson Bay and Little Beach, and route 134 runs from Soldiers Point to Anna Bay, where the dune tours start. The Koala Sanctuary's bus stop is on Gan Gan Road. Surfboards are allowed on local buses if there is room; bikes are not.

The tours meet at fixed points. Sandboarding has no hotel pickup, so get to the Anna Bay car park on James Paterson St. The quad ride runs a transfer on Saturdays only; other days you need your own way to Williamtown. The cruises leave from Nelson Bay, walking distance from most hotels there.

How do you travel from Port Stephens to Sydney?

On the morning Sydney Express: it picks up across the peninsula, then Williamtown at 9:38am and Tomago at 10:05am, and runs to Hornsby, Pymble, Chatswood and Central Station.

The coach only goes south in the morning and north in the afternoon. The Anna Bay transfer picks up on Frost Rd opposite Seawinds Village at 9:05am (Port Stephens Coaches flags that the printed brochure gets this time wrong); check the online timetable for Nelson Bay, Shoal Bay and the other stops. Book 72 hours ahead, and if you are flying out of Sydney, leave a wide margin: the coach runs to its timetable and does not wait.

The other way back is the reverse of the way in: bus route 130 to Newcastle Interchange and the train to Central, or a flight from Newcastle Airport.
