Every year humpbacks swim about 10,000 km from Antarctic waters to the Queensland breeding grounds and back, and Imagine Cruises says they generally pass within 3 km of the Port Stephens coast. That short hop offshore is the reason Nelson Bay runs some of the best whale cruises in New South Wales.
The 2026 cruises started in late May and finish in the first half of November. If you are reading this in the last week, you can still catch the tail of the southern run. If not, this is your plan for next year.
The quick answer
Port Stephens whale cruises run from late May to early November. In 2026 Moonshadow TQC sailed from 23 May to about 8 to 10 November, Imagine Cruises from May to early November. The northern run (May to July) brings the most breaching; September to November brings mothers with calves. The 1.5-hour Whale Watching Express from Teramby Road comes with a free standby return voucher, valid 12 months, if you see no whales.
When is whale season in Port Stephens in 2026?
From late May to early November. Moonshadow TQC's 2026 season opened on 23 May, and Imagine Cruises and AquaMarine Adventures list May to November.
All three operators leave from Nelson Bay. Moonshadow and Imagine use d'Albora Marina; the express boat goes from Teramby Road, a few steps away. Moonshadow's own page gives two end dates for 2026, 8 November in one place and 10 November in another, so treat the second week of November as the end of the road and check your booking confirmation.
The humpbacks set the calendar, not the boats. Destination Port Stephens splits it in two: adults heading north from May to July, when breaching is common, and whales heading south with newborn calves from September to November. August is the crossover, with whales going both ways.
| Operator | Cruise | 2026 season | Adult price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moonshadow TQC | Whale Watching Cruise, 2.5 hours, 10am and 1:30pm | 23 May to 8 or 10 November 2026 (both dates appear on its site) | A$85 |
| Imagine Cruises | Whale + Dolphin Watch on a 16 m sailing catamaran, 3 hours | May to early November | A$89 |
| AquaMarine Adventures (our pick) | Whale Watching Express, 1.5 hours, up to 12 guests | May to November | From $69 on GetYourGuide |
How did the 2026 humpback season go?
Locally, well. Moonshadow TQC's general manager James McArthur told News Of The Area early on that good numbers were already passing, and reviews kept reporting calves and breaches into October.
Port Stephens guests were not short of whales. Alison, on the express cruise in October 2026, wrote that the small boat meant they were "closer to a whale with her calf" and that "it was so amazing to see the baby breach". Jade, in July, saw "quite a few whales, dolphins and a seal!" Not every trip got the big show. Lisa in September saw whales "from a distance" and missed a breach, which is how wild animals work.
A 12-guest boat that heads straight out to the whales, with a free standby trip if none show.
Check dates for the whale cruiseCan you still see whales in Port Stephens in November?
Yes, in the first days. The last whales on the southern run are mostly mothers and calves, and Moonshadow's cruises run to 8 or 10 November 2026. After that, the next whale cruises start in late May.
Destination Port Stephens calls September to November the time for mothers and newborn calves heading south. It is a quieter kind of watching: fewer breaches, more blows, flukes and a small dark shape beside a big one. Imagine's whale guarantee runs from 1 June to 1 November only, so a cruise in the final week of the season sails without it.
The express cruise's guarantee works differently. If you see no whales, you get a free return voucher on a standby basis, valid for 12 months from issue. Miss them on a late cruise and the voucher still covers you next winter.

Do Port Stephens whale cruises guarantee you will see a whale?
Some do, in the form of a free return trip, not a refund. The rules differ by operator and by date, so read them before you pick a cruise.
Moonshadow says plainly that 100% sighting success is not guaranteed and refunds are not given; it issues a non-transferable free return voucher, standby basis, at the crew's discretion. Imagine guarantees whales from 1 June to 1 November or you sail again for free, and its FAQ says the free return is valid for the next 12 months and cannot move between guests or boats. The Whale Watching Express gives a standby voucher, valid 12 months.
Standby means you join a later cruise if there is a spare seat. On a quiet weekday that is easy. In the July school holidays, aim for a weekday morning.
| Cruise | If you see no whales | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Moonshadow TQC | No 100% guarantee; a non-transferable free return voucher, standby basis, at crew discretion | Whole season |
| Imagine Cruises | Whales guaranteed or a free return cruise | 1 June to 1 November |
| Whale Watching Express (GetYourGuide) | Free return cruise voucher on a standby basis, valid 12 months from issue | Whole season |
Which Port Stephens whale cruise should you book?
For time with the whales and a small group, the 1.5-hour express. For a longer outing with seals, islands and a bar, one of the 2.5 to 3 hour cruises.
The express is a fast 40-foot power catamaran for up to 12 guests, from $69 on GetYourGuide. Less time getting there, more time beside the whales, and everyone gets a rail. It is rated 4.5 from 87 reviews. Bring a windbreaker and a jacket; strollers are not allowed on board. The bigger boats go slower but add the fur seals at Cabbage Tree Island and the outer islands, and Imagine can sail alongside the whales when conditions allow.
- Seasickness: this is open ocean, not the bay. Imagine and Moonshadow both suggest talking to a pharmacist before the cruise if you get queasy.
- Clothing: it is cooler offshore than on land. Imagine recommends warm layers, long pants and enclosed shoes on winter cruises.
- Time of day: Imagine's FAQ says no time is better than another. Pick the slot that fits your day.
- How close: NSW rules keep boats at least 100 m from a whale, and 300 m when a calf is present. Curious whales often come closer on their own.
| Approach rule (NSW) | Minimum distance |
|---|---|
| Boats, kayaks, surfboards: closest approach | 100 m |
| Boats when a calf is present | 300 m (no entry to the caution zone) |
| Jet skis and other prohibited vessels | 300 m |
| Swimmers entering the water | 100 m |
| Drones | 100 m |
| Mostly white whales | 500 m |

From late May to early November 2027. Operators had not published 2027 dates when we checked; 2026 opened on 23 May. Book June or July for breaching, September or October for calves.
Weekend cruises in peak season sell out, Destination Port Stephens says, so book a few weeks ahead for a Saturday. Moonshadow sold a 5-cruise multi pass for the 2026 season at A$300; watch for a 2027 version if you plan to go out more than twice.
You can also watch from land, for free. NSW National Parks rates the Tomaree Head summit walk above Shoal Bay best for whales from May to November: 2.2 km return, steep, 161 m above the harbour entrance. Destination Port Stephens adds Barry Park lookout at Fingal Bay, Boat Harbour and Birubi Point. Out of season, the bay's 100 or so resident bottlenose dolphins are there all year; the dolphin sail runs from November to the end of April. Our dolphin and whale watching guide compares every cruise.

Summer visit? The bay's dolphins are home all year: sail with them from d'Albora Marina.
