Port Stephens has no railway station. The nearest is Newcastle, and from Sydney the simplest public option is Port Stephens Coaches' Sydney Express, a private coach that runs from Central Station to the bays.
It is a good, cheap ride for a weekend or longer. It is not a day-trip tool, because of how the timetable works, and that is the one thing most people miss.
The quick answer
The Sydney Express runs once a day each way, every day except Christmas Day. It leaves Central Station (Bay 8) at 1:45pm and stops at Chatswood, Pymble and Hornsby, with Ourimbah on request. Fares are A$45 one way or A$65 return for adults, A$35/A$52 for children 5 to 15 and concessions. Book 72 hours ahead to guarantee a seat. For a same-day return, take a day tour instead.
Is there a coach from Sydney to Port Stephens in 2026?
Yes. Port Stephens Coaches runs the Sydney Express once a day in each direction, seven days a week, except Christmas Day. The morning coach leaves Port Stephens; the afternoon coach leaves Sydney.
The Sydney coach departs Central Station from Bay 8 at 1:45pm sharp, per the operator's 2026 pick-up map, with boarding from about 1:30pm. Get there 15 minutes before; the terms ask for it. In Port Stephens the coach serves Fingal Bay, Shoal Bay, Nelson Bay, Corlette, Salamander Bay, Soldiers Point and Anna Bay.
The route changed this year. Roadworks at Heatherbrae caused long delays, so Port Stephens Coaches dropped Heatherbrae and Campvale for good and made Williamtown a permanent stop, plus a new one at Tomago. Its timetable lists these times; the full list of town stops is in the booking system.

Where does the Sydney Express stop in Sydney?
Central Station, then Chatswood, Pymble and Hornsby, with Ourimbah on the Central Coast on request. The same stops work on the way back.
Central is the easy one if you are flying in or staying in the city: trains, light rail and buses all meet there. The operator's map marks a recommended walking route to Bay 8, which is worth a look before your first trip. North Shore stops suit anyone staying in Chatswood or Hornsby and save the trip into town.
The coach runs to a timetable and stops only at its listed points. It will not wait for a late train or plane, the FAQ says, so build in a buffer after a flight.

What can you bring on the Sydney Express?
One bag up to 20 kg plus a small bag inside the coach. Extra bags are A$10 each and must be booked ahead. No pets, no food or sugary drinks; bottled water is fine.
- Luggage: 1 bag per passenger, 20 kg maximum, and the driver may ask you to load an overweight bag yourself.
- Food: food, snacks and sugary drinks are not allowed on board, and no alcohol. Eat before Central.
- Animals: pets are not permitted. Accredited assistance animals travel, booked in advance and in their vest.
- Children: under 10s must travel with an adult; unaccompanied 10 to 12 year olds need a form filed before travel.
- Proof of purchase: a printed confirmation or a screenshot on your phone.
Coaches have air conditioning, reclining seats with seat belts and USB charging, per the Destination NSW listing.
Can you do a Port Stephens day trip by coach from Sydney?
Not on the Sydney Express. It leaves Sydney at 1:45pm and comes back the next morning, so a coach trip means at least one night in Port Stephens.
The coach takes longer than driving, too: about 2.5 hours by car, while the afternoon coach first reaches Tomago at 4:10pm. For one free day and no car, a day tour is the right buy. The Port Stephens day tour (from $172) gives you about 5 hours in Port Stephens with a dolphin cruise, the Koala Sanctuary and 4WD sandboarding included. Ellie, in September 2026, wrote: "We met at central station 6:45am and headed of to port Stephens. We arrived around 10am."
On a tighter budget, the budget day trip (from $96) leaves from 812 George St near Central, runs 12 hours and gives about 5 to 6 hours there: free time at the dunes or the beach and a guided Tomaree hike. Its 4x4 and sandboarding (from $40 pp) and camel ride (from $50 pp) are paid on the day.

Coach or day tour: which is better for Port Stephens?
Coach if you can stay at least one night; a day tour if you have one free day and no car. Staying lets you do the cruise, the koalas and the dunes locally for less.
With a night or two, the coach is great value. Arrive in the late afternoon, then book the local trips, which start in Nelson Bay, Anna Bay or One Mile and take 1 to 1.5 hours each: the dolphin sail from $35, the Koala Sanctuary from $19 and unlimited sandboarding from $28. Local buses take Opal or a contactless card, no cash, per Port Stephens Coaches.
With one day, the coach cannot do it and a hire car means 5 hours of driving. The day tour does the driving for you. Our guide to getting to Port Stephens covers driving, flying into Newcastle and the train to Newcastle as well.
